Spanish footballer Gerard Pique allegedly hurled a disgusting insult towards a linesman

IF HEAVEN exists and Gerard Pique really did say this, he can kiss his chances of strolling through the pearly gates goodbye.

While footballers are known for spending as much time complaining to officials as they do playing, the Spanish international took this reputation to another stratosphere by allegedly hurling a disgusting remark towards a linesman.

Playing for Barcelona in their Spanish Super Cup tie against Athletic Bilbao on Monday, the central defender unleashed a vile tirade towards the official after he failed to raise his flag for offside during a Bilbao attacking raid.

According to referee Velasco Carballo’s post-match notes, Pique screamed “I s*** on your whore mother” at assistant Oscar De Marcos.

Pique was sent off for the transgression, which occurred in the 58th minute, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw with Athletic Bilbao winning the tie 5-1 on aggregate.

The 28-year-old faces the possibility of a 12-match suspension, though that is unlikely, with some suggesting a five-game ban is more probable. Regardless, he will miss the La Liga opener on Sunday, also against Bilbao.

The veteran of 69 international appearances is appealing his red card at Camp Nou, with the club releasing a statement saying “Barcelona filed objections on Tuesday to the red card shown to Gerard Pique in the 58th minute of the second leg of the Supercopa de Espana against Athletic Bilbao”.

On Tuesday he apologised for the incident on Twitter, but protested his innocence regarding the exact wording of what was said.

“I apologise for the attitude I used to protest with the linesman, it was not correct,” wrote Pique.

“It was a very tense match in which a lot was at stake. However, at no time did I say any kind of insult towards him.”

Pique's tirade

After losing the first leg 4-0 the Catalans were never really in the hunt to win the tie, but Pique’s exit all but sealed their fate.

Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said the loss would provide a reality check for his team, searching for their sixth premiership in eight years.

“In my opinion Bilbao played a great first leg and they are worthy champions,” Enrique said. “You have to know how to win and lose.

“It is good to lose sometimes to help you understand how hard and rewarding it is to win.

“The final ended when Gerard Pique was sent off. We remain a united group and we are certainly competitive.”
